Who holds US Treasuries

Holdings by the country where the securities are held in custody. That is not always the owner's country: Belgium, Luxembourg and the Cayman Islands hold large amounts for investors elsewhere.

Into major economies

Annual net inflows of foreign direct investment (building or buying businesses) and portfolio equity (buying listed shares). These show the longer-term direction of money.

The monthly read

A short email after each TIC release: where money moved, what changed among the big holders, and the charts that matter.

Method and sources

  • US flows: US Treasury, Treasury International Capital (TIC) monthly release, published about seven weeks after each month ends. "Official" means foreign central banks and governments; "private" is everyone else.
  • Treasury holders: TIC Table 5, Major Foreign Holders of Treasury Securities, end-of-month holdings at market value.
  • Economies: World Bank World Development Indicators (indicators BX.KLT.DINV.CD.WD and BX.PEF.TOTL.CD.WD), compiled from IMF balance-of-payments statistics, licensed CC BY 4.0.
  • Caveats: TIC records the country of the custodian or intermediary, not always the final investor. Ireland's and Luxembourg's figures are shaped by investment funds and multinational structures domiciled there.
